In the heart of Lincoln's Havelock neighborhood lies The Charging Station, a coffee shop that’s more than just a caffeine fix—it’s a portal to the past and a testament to community spirit. Stepping into this cozy spot feels like discovering a hidden gem, where history and modernity intertwine in the most delightful ways.
Anthony Bourdain once said, “Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o’clock in a mostly empty bar. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyway. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride.” This ethos perfectly captures the essence of The Charging Station—a place to savor life’s simple pleasures and connect with the local community.
A Tribute to Havelock’s Heritage
Havelock, founded in 1890 along the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, is a district rich in history. The Charging Station pays homage to this legacy with its name and its atmosphere. Previously a utility company building, the coffee shop honors its industrial roots while offering a fresh and inviting space to "charge up and chill out."

Where Vintage Meets Modern
Inside, The Charging Station is a harmonious blend of vintage charm and modern convenience. The first floor features an array of 111 vintage light bulbs suspended from the ceiling, creating a warm, nostalgic glow. Various seating options cater to all, with outlets at every table and the innovative Honor Bar—a touch-screen kiosk where you can order and pay for your coffee without waiting in line. For those who prefer a more traditional experience, the handmade bar counter offers personalized service from skilled coffee craftsmen.
Creating a Community Space
But The Charging Station is more than just a place to get coffee; it’s a community hub. The second floor boasts a conference room, loft seating with a skylight, and old church pews that add a touch of history to the atmosphere. Alec Calzada, the visionary behind The Charging Station, plans to transform the staircase to resemble a train car, further connecting to Havelock’s railway heritage. The entire space, including the conference room, is available for the community to use for free, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared purpose.
A Family's Journey to Nebraska
Alec and his wife moved from California to Nebraska with their three children, driven by faith and a sense of adventure. They found a welcoming community in Lincoln, particularly through their church, and embraced their new home with open arms. Alec’s dream for The Charging Station goes beyond serving great coffee—he envisions it as a catalyst for Havelock’s evolution into a vibrant, niche destination akin to Lincoln’s Haymarket.
